The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States and its waters and shores are home to thousands of species. It provides jobs, recreation and economic opportunities to the people that live near it. The Bay faces many environmental challenges, including pollution from agricultural runoff, urban development, sewage, and climate change. Excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus contribute to algal blooms and low-oxygen “dead zones,” which harm the animals in the ecosystem. Habitat loss and rising sea levels also threaten the long-term health of the Bay.
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is dedicated to protecting the bay and all the species that call it home. They promote environmental education, engage in restoration policies and push policy to protect the Bay.
